Things to do in Rhodes

The largest of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is famous as the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus of Rhodes, a magnificent statue of Helios erected by Chares of Lindos in 280 BC and destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC. Although the statue no longer stands, Rhodes maintained its fame and is today one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, especially for its Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ancient sites of Rhodes

The Medieval City of Rhodes is one of the main attractions of the island as it features a unique urban landscape, which combines architectural landmarks erected by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem with valuable Islamic buildings. Stroll down the Street of the Knights and get lost in the maze of pedestrian alleyways of the Old Town for a trip back in time.

The Acropolis of Lindos, 50 kilometres south of the town of Rhodes, is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Greece. The village itself is interesting for its colourful cubic homes lining along a labyrinth of narrow streets, so planned to confuse the pirates and other invaders.

The sun-kissed beaches of Rhodes

For sun chasers, the beaches of Rhodes provide idyllic sand stretches, awe-inspiring sea views, and countless opportunities for watersports, including diving and snorkelling in crystal-clear waters. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Kallithea Springs, a natural spa known since antiquity for its therapeutic properties.

Enjoy the ride: Rhodes trips

For nature lovers, Rhodes is a veritable paradise. It has extensive forests of pine and Mediterranean cypress, a rich diversity of orchids, picturesque orchards of citrus, and olive groves. Birdwatching is a fascinating pastime, with some 250+ bird species nesting or migrating through the island. When you hike, watch out for vipers and other venomous snakes.

Visit Faliraki for its Blue Flag beaches, or drive to the summit of Filerimos Mountain and follow the path to the Cross to see fabulous views of Ialysos, Kremasti, Sgourou, and the town of Rhodes in the distance.

Last, but not least, visit a countryside mountain village and the ancient sites, churches, and monasteries that will reflect the true spirit of the island better than the main touristic attractions.
